So . . . there are some things that scare me because they seem either hard to paint or easy to screw up.  One of these things is the sunrise.  It seems ridiculous to be scared of a sunrise, though, so I made myself paint one on this 6x6 artist panel, inspired by "The Bird Husband," which, like "Boo Hag," is a tale in which the protagonist marries a supernatural spouse.  I love the way this turned out, even if the Bird is kind of a jerk who ought to be a lot nicer to his wife.

This will be available in the auction starting February 1!  Here's the link!

  1. There is so much to love here. The sunset is indeed beautifully done, but so is that stunning silhouetted tree! I am also struck by the curve of the horizon in a U shape--it's both unexpected and perfect for for scooping the foreground into the background. The bird is wonderful, but the way the wife is looking up and gently touching the bird husband, even as he looks away is a beautiful portrayal of pleading and adoration combined.

There's a brilliant ambiguity to this shot. If it's a sunrise and she is coaxing the bird, then it's possible this is a happy ending, in which her years of penance has ended and she will get her long-sought forgiveness. But this could be a sunset at the beginning of her woes as the bird turns away in anger about to punish her. Possibly, it is both the beginning and the ending of the story. Love it.
